This internship assignment is for an US organization which specializes in biotechnological medicines, with a powerful sense of a shared purpose towards our mission of serving patients worldwide. At the Breda site we receive semi-manufactured products which are then labeled and packed country-specific and shipped to various countries worldwide. Our motto: “Every Patient, Every Time.”

System lifecycle management
In today’s dynamic manufacturing world, production systems are becoming more and more integrated within the Information Systems world. This leads to a more efficient and more controlled production plant with powerful tools for data analytics and remote monitoring.
Since systems are becoming more and more integrated, security risks are also becoming more prominent. Cyber security is a major challenge in today’s ever-changing technological landscape. In order to stay up-to-date, most manufacturing systems require OS upgrades, application upgrades, regular patching and maintenance. In a pharmaceutical GxP environment however systems are strictly controlled, and most activities or updates require thorough validation and time-intensive testing.
The IS and Engineering world are merging and are rapidly evolving and we face challenges to bring them together and to keep pace with the latest state-of-the-art technology.

Operating system management within a pharmaceutical production environment
Now that our manufacturing systems are connected to the network we are confronted with cyber threats and we must extend our efforts to have the latest technologies and the best security to protect our production environment.
Early 2020 Windows 7 is becoming unsupported by Microsoft. We need to cooperate with our machine suppliers to develop a plan on how to deal with the life cycle management of our production equipment. We are looking for the best methods and tools to deal with OS upgrades and distribution of patches.
There are furthermore no effective processes in place to manage this dynamic manufacturing environment.

An Internship compensation of €500,- per month
Explore solutions, develop strategies and introduce tools and processes to effectively maintain an up-to-date OS and patching level within production.
Investigate the current state of our manufacturing department compromising approx. 25 machine suppliers and 78 systems.
Survey the machine suppliers on their current and future developments.
Explore the market for tools and technologies that can support our system life cycle management. As for example Baramundi software which can help us in gaining insight in the current patching level of systems and which also offers a solution for releasing updates in a controlled way.
Develop methodologies to assess which updates are critical and to determine which systems are at risk and which are considered safe.
Create a new process together with the validation and quality department to validate and test updates in an efficient and compliant way.
Create a project plan and propose a schedule for unsafe or unsupported systems
Deploy efficient backup and restore strategies
