This internship assignment is for an US organization which specializes in biotechnological medicines, with a powerful sense of a shared purpose towards our mission of serving patients worldwide. At the Breda site we receive semi-manufactured products which are then labeled and packed country-specific and shipped to various countries worldwide. Our motto: “Every Patient, Every Time.”

In today’s dynamic manufacturing world, production systems are becoming more and more integrated within the Information Systems world. This leads to a more efficient and more controlled production plant with powerful tools for data analytics and remote monitoring.
Since systems are becoming more and more integrated, security risks are also becoming more prominent. Cyber security is a major challenge in today’s ever-changing technological landscape. In order to stay up-to-date, most manufacturing systems require OS upgrades, application upgrades, regular patching and maintenance. In a pharmaceutical GxP environment however systems are strictly controlled, and most activities or updates require thorough validation and time-intensive testing.
The IS and Engineering world are merging and are rapidly evolving and we face challenges to bring them together and to keep pace with the latest state-of-the-art technology.

Develop a Centralized Engineering Environment using Siemens TIA Portal
Within the company Production facility multiple Production lines are equipped with Siemens Industrial Automation components like Siemens S7 PLCs & HMI panels.
The overall oversight and complexity is within the variety of Production line specific Engineering platforms needed for maintaining/upgrading/monitoring Production lines.
Currently, updates to Siemens Firmware / OS are performed manually, and Remote Vendor Access support is difficult to realize.

As manufacturing systems will be connected to the network, manufacturing systems become at risk as they are confronted with cyber threats. Extensive effort must be realized to have the latest technologies and the best security to protect our Production environment.
Adherence to Cybersecurity threats becomes critical as our Manufacturing systems are potentially risks for cyber-attacks, therefore the Goal is to develop and implement an oversight Virtual Engineering Platform with the latest Siemens TIA Portal Engineering package, which acts as portal for Remote or Local access to Siemens equipment.
Investigate the current software version of Siemens manufacturing equipment per Production line,
Explore the benefits & possibilities of TIA portal in partnership with Siemens Industry,
Survey and co-operate with Machine suppliers for migrating/updating opportunities to TIA portal,
Develop a strategy for initial implementation and for long term,
Develop a plan/concept for an overall Architecture layout,
Implement the concept with best methods and tools for:
